The Numinous North
Tombstone Territorial Park
2 days photography and hiking
August 30 - September 1, 2008 (Labour Day weekend)
Description
Please refer to the Mountain Light trip description, as this photography weekend is intended as an add-on to the Mountain Light trip itinerary.
We will be camping at Tombstone campground as well for this weekend. Numinous North is specifically timed for Yukoners who wish to travel to the Tombstones for a long
weekend of autumn-colour photography and hiking, or for Mountain Light participants who wish to stay on for a weekend of focused photography and instruction.
Plan to arrive at Tombstone campground on Friday night so we can start the workshop over breakfast on Saturday morning. The workshop will end after breakfast on Monday,
so participants are free to either head off hiking for the day or to use the day to travel home.
"Numinous" is defined as "of or pertaining to the spiritual and supernatural". How often have we looked at a landscape and felt a degree of transformation or elevation?
How is the process of walking through the landscape a numinous journey, and how may photography be our personal reflection of this experience? In this workshop, we will take
short day hikes in Tombstone mountains and share images in evening presentations. Through this process, we will explore how an image may be our vehicle for sharing the
numinous qualities we discover in the wild.

Marten Berkman is a northern photographer, film maker and visual artist who lives with his family upstream from Whitehorse, Yukon. His work focuses on arctic and
subarctic light, landscapes and life. Marten is interested in how the art and process of photography can provide a meaningful bridge between people and the north's wild and
remote landscapes. Marten’s images appear regularly in solo and group exhibits, publications and books, while his award winning documentaries have been shown across Canada
and internationally. More information about his still images, films and visual art can be found at www.martenberkman.com.
Jill Pangman is very familiar with the country along the Dempster . She worked on the highway as a naturalist and biologist in 1984 and has traveled the road
countless times since. She has hiked up innumerable valleys and peaks in the Ogilvies as well as Richardson Mountains, and has been guiding hikers and wildlife enthusiasts
here since the mid 80s. Jill has 25 years of experience as a wilderness guide, outdoor educator, naturalist, and conservationist. Her passion is exploring wild places and sharing these
experiences with others. She recognizes the capacity of wilderness sojourns to rejuvenate and inspire, and to deepen our connection to the natural world as well as to
ourselves. She expresses her own love of nature, and her commitment to the healing of our world through her guiding, writing, photography and conservation-oriented work.
She has immense gratitude for the beauty of nature as well as the human spirit, and she finds that leading journeys into the wilderness is an ideal venue to share this
appreciation.
