Questions about Equipment and What to Bring

Am I restricted in how much gear I can bring?
Yes, to a certain degree. We need you to keep personal gear to a minimum, while still taking enough to be comfortable and safe. Our Clothing and Equipment list will outline the gear you will need. Try to pack light for hiking trips, remember there will be group gear and food to add to your packs, so think twice about those hard cover novels! We have several tricks to squish down your sleeping bags to make it all fit in, but we can’t work miracles. With some of the "fly in" or "fly out" excursions, we also have a weight limit for certain aircrafts, so every bit helps.

What about safety?
Your safety is one of our prime concerns. Any decisions regarding safety are ultimately made by your guides, with full consideration for your comfort and well-being in mind. Listening carefully to the instructions and directions of the guides is ultimately your responsibility and in the best interest of yourself and that of the group. Your guides are professionals, familiar with the equipment and environment you are travelling through. They are trained in advanced wilderness first aid techniques, river rescue skills in addition to other specialties. They will be equipped with a satellite phone for logistic and emergency communication.

Will I have my own tent?
Generally there will be 2 people per tent. If you are travelling alone, your tent mate will be of the same gender. If you wish to bring your own tent please contact our office to discuss its adequacy for that particular trip.

What can you tell me about camera gear?
Although we can’t quarantee close-ups of wildlife, you will be in dramatic landscapes, with plenty of opportunities to take photos. A 35mm camera with long lenses give you the greatest flexibility (but are heavy on a hiking trip) and even an instamatic will give you good results.
It is crucial to weather-proof your gear. On water-based journeys you'll need a waterproof container (such as a Pelican case) and dust protection is a consideration on all trips. Bring plenty of film or memory cards, as you will probably shoot much more than you had expected, and the images you see may be "once in a lifetime".

Do I need my own maps?
Your guides will have a set of maps but if you want your own set, topographical information is provided on each trip itinerary.

What reading do you recommend?
Your guides carry a portable library of reference materials. See our book list for a comprehensive list of reading material about the Yukon.
